What to Expect
Pelvic health evaluation:
Your evaluation will begin with a detailed medical and personal history to help develop an accurate diagnosis. The next steps of the assessment will be guided entirely by your comfort level; only what you feel ready to do will be performed during your visit.
You will undress from the waist down and lie flat on a treatment table for an external assessment of the pelvic floor. This allows us to evaluate tissue integrity, muscle function, scar tissue, and any restrictions.
If you feel comfortable, an internal pelvic floor assessment may also be performed. This is different from a gynecological exam with a speculum. Using a gloved finger, each muscle is gently assessed for strength, tone, flexibility, and sensation. The evaluation is conducted slowly, mindfully, and without pain. You remain in full control and can stop the assessment at any time.
Following the evaluation, we will review the findings together and discuss a personalized treatment plan.
Follow-up sessions focus on hands-on techniques to address your specific impairments, alongside the development of a tailored home program designed to meet your goals and support ongoing recovery.
Breast Cancer Rehab and Lymphedema evaluation:
At your first appointment, a comprehensive evaluation of the affected area will be completed. Many patients have not received adequate education about lymphedema management, so we will discuss this in detail until you feel confident and all your questions are answered. If you require the intensive phase of treatment—which typically involves two weeks of at least three sessions per week including manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) and compression bandaging—a plan to begin this process will be developed. Compression bandages are available for purchase directly at the clinic.
During your next visit, manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) will be performed, and compression bandaging will be applied to your arm. Please note that the bandages can feel bulky and may initially feel unusual or alarming. We will practice moving your arm before you leave to ensure you have sufficient range of motion for daily activities. Depending on your comfort level, you may or may not feel ready to drive home immediately after the appointment.
Follow-up sessions will continue with repeated MLD and compression bandaging until your lymphedema stabilizes. Once stabilized, you will be referred to Transitions at Providence to have your arm measured for a custom compression garment.
Orthopedic evaluation:
Your first appointment will begin with a detailed history of your injury to help form an accurate diagnosis. A thorough assessment will then be performed to confirm the diagnosis and begin developing a personalized plan of care. We will provide a clear explanation of your injury and treatment plan, addressing all your questions until you fully understand what is happening in your body. There is usually time to begin some hands-on treatment during this initial visit. Please wear comfortable “workout” clothing for ease of movement.
Follow-up sessions focus on hands-on treatment techniques and the development of a tailored home program to maintain the progress achieved in the clinic. Loose shorts are recommended for easy access to the lumbar spine, pelvis, and hips, though we will also provide shorts if needed.
Your physical therapist will continue to work with you until you achieve your goals and are able to return to the activities that matter most to you.
